Description
It’s one of those cool, marine, spring days. The breeze blows lightly but enough to encourage one to pull their jacket closer. The sun, diffused behind a thin veil of clouds, breaks forth now and then to warm the landscape.
And down at the bay, a sailboat glides gently by.
Like most sailboats, it is in no hurry. If it were, it would start up its backup motor and get where it wants to go quickly, without waiting on breeze or wind. But it is not in frenzy or flurry, nor is the person who lives in the red house. Here in their flower bedecked yard, perched perfectly above Puget Sound in Port Townsend, WA, the householder of the red Victorian home has a vista that gently changes through the day and seasons, but does not, like a movie, jump from scene to scene to scene.
The artwork, Passing By, invites the viewer to enter the painting, pretend they know the owner of the house, walk through the gate, step into the yard, and grab a chair. Perhaps, because it is a cool day, there is a blanket or afghan available, and the viewer and householder can sit, companionably and contentedly, while they watch the sailboats glide by.
Do people do this anymore? Many adults, remembering their schooldays, talk about walking home and passing by householders sitting in lawn chairs set up on the porch or in the yard. Some of the people in the chairs smoked pipes or cigarettes, others sat with a book, still others were content to watch the traffic and people pass by. Some waved, some didn’t.
But all took time out of their day to do what we, in our anxious, nervous society, consider “nothing.” They looked, they listened, they watched, they thought and contemplated and daydreamed. They were content, for a few moments each day, to watch the world Passing By.
